User guide: Ad Unit Configuration
Maximising Revenue with Ad Unit Configuration
Welcome to Pubstack's user guide on optimising ad revenue by creating and managing ad units from Pubstack’s single interface. In this guide, we'll explore the benefits of this feature, backed by a use case, and provide clear instructions on effortlessly implementing it within the Pubstack platform.
The Challenge
Many publishers encounter significant obstacles in maximising the potential of their ad units, often resulting in missed revenue opportunities. One major issue is the lack of comprehensive configuration across various ad sizes, leading to missed bids from demand partners who may be seeking specific formats, resulting in missed revenue opportunities. Additionally, publishers face delays and inefficiencies due to their reliance on technical teams for ad unit setup and management.
Our solution addresses these challenges by giving publishers greater autonomy and simplifying the ad unit configuration process. By empowering publishers to configure ad units without extensive developer involvement easily, we enable them to capitalise on all available revenue opportunities. Moreover, our approach ensures publishers stay updated on market trends and ad size benchmarks, maximising their potential for programmatic revenue growth and maintaining an agile operational model.
What is Ad Unit Configuration, and Why Does it Matter?
Ad unit configuration in the Pubstack Ad Management product is a pivotal process for monetising digital advertising inventory. It involves defining ad units at the scope level and tailoring them to specific devices, enabling reuse across multiple sites.
By using Pubstack, you can seamlessly create and configure ad units for all your sites and devices from a unified interface.
The platform supports standard and custom ad sizes, including various Prebid formats and Outstream videos. This feature allows you to generate, set up, and map ad units, choose the target devices, select the preferred demand source, and implement advanced options like dynamic adUnits (allowing you to re-use multiple time adUnit on the same page, for instance, for infinite scroll).
Understanding and effectively managing ad unit configuration is crucial as it directly impacts the efficiency and profitability of your digital advertising strategy.
How Can You Make the Most of Your Ad Units Thanks to Ad Unit Configuration?
One of our clients identified an opportunity to optimise revenue by quickly adding a new ad size to their existing ad unit, a process completed in seconds. This quick action enabled them to launch an A/B test immediately, comparing the performance of the new size against the existing setup.
The A/B test results revealed a +5,5% Prebid revenue uplift, demonstrating the benefits of Pubstack’s platform in facilitating rapid, data-driven decisions to enhance ad monetisation strategies.
Key Considerations and Pitfalls When Implementing Ad Unit Configuration
- Optimising Ads for Screen Size: Tailor ad sizes for different devices. Larger screens can accommodate more ads, boosting engagement and revenue.
- Balancing Ad Density and User Experience: Maintain a balance between ad quantity and user experience. Excessive ads deter users, while too few reduce revenue.
- Ensuring Ad Relevance and Context: Align ads with the content and user preferences. Contextual relevance increases ad effectiveness and user trust.
- Ensure precise sizing alignment with each ad unit to optimize revenue without overloading placements: Some publishers aim to include numerous ad sizes to capture all potential opportunities, but this strategy can backfire. Some bidders truncate sizes if there are too many. Pubstack recommends the optimal sizes for each ad unit to mitigate this risk and maximize revenue potential.
How Do You Configure Ad Units with Pubstack?
- Click on the ‘Ad Units’ navigation menu from the app, under ‘Inventory’
- Click on the button ‘Add ad unit’ to create a new ad unit
- Fill in the following fields to identify the ad unit:
- Name: Pubstack ad unit name. It cannot be edited later.
- ‘Ad server’ and ‘Ad unit’ name: Ad unit identification in the Ad server.
- Technical identification: Name of the Div ID container to be served within your HTML page.
- Select the devices where the ad unit can be served. Pubstack will suggest Standard and High-Impact ad formats that match your device selection.
- Select your desired format. Pubstack provides preselected recommended sizes for each format type. If none of the proposed formats suits your needs, select the Custom format and enter your sizes in the next step.
- Behaviour settings (optional): You can enable/disable the Dynamic setting for the Ad unit. This allows duplicate Ad units to be served in a layout when scrolling the screen.
- Click "Continue" to proceed.
- Demand source (optional): By default, the header bidding toggle is active to call your ad unit with your Prebid bidders. Only Prebid is supported for the moment.
- You can disable the header bidding demand source by clicking on the toggle.
- You can activate the header bidding demand source after creation, but you cannot disable it at all
- In the Media Type section, the recommended sizes for your selected ad format are under "Standard Sizes." You can add or remove sizes as needed, ensuring the formatting follows the "number" x "number" format (e.g., 300x250, 728x90).
- Standard sizes: Standard size is used to call header bidding and Ad server solutions.
- Custom sizes: Custom sizes are dedicated to the ad server to allow you to deliver your custom ad format. Those sizes will be called only within your ad server call.
- Fluid: Click on the toggle to send fluid size for native format rendering by GAM.
- Behaviour settings (optional): You can enable/disable each behaviour setting for the ad unit with a toggle.
- Outstream: You can enable or disable Outstream videos for your ad unit. Please note that this is only available for certain formats.
- Key-values (optional): You can add key values to be sent to the Ad server with this dedicated adUnit (instead of page-level targeting).
-
- Click on “Add key-value” and fill in “Key label” and ”Values label” to assign one or more values, with a maximum of 10 values per key.
-
- You can delete a key value by clicking the bin button.
- Once all the mandatory fields are filled, you can validate the creation, and the ad unit will be displayed on the list below. From this screen, you can:
- Add a new ad unit by clicking on the button
- Edit an existing ad unit by clicking the right pen button
- Search an ad unit by filling in the text field on the left
